LUYAA Fall 2005 Newsletter
Published April 2005

President’s Message
LUYAA Members,
As we close out winter sports and move into warmer weather many
volunteers are planning, organizing and preparing for LUYAA spring sports.
The LUYAA board of directors and I are working together to build the
business of our organization and strengthen as we move into the future.
Developing our BOD, our staff, commissioners and our coaches are top
priorities. Selecting strong leaders means success for LUYAA and better
mentors for our young athletes. We will continue to focus on growth and
improving what we offer to the children and families of our community.
Stepping into today’s technology LUYAA offered online registration along
with our walk in service during spring sign ups. The new online registration
required working through a few hurdles but over all was a success and will
be offered again for fall sign ups. The new service is not only convenient
for our members it provides tools to the commissioners and coaches that
assist with creating rosters and team reports. Please work with us as we
continue to enhance the application and system going forward. We do
encourage you to take advantage of this online option but we will continue
to offer the walk in service.
Maintaining equal balance between school and sports
This can be difficult for both parents and our children as we all have busy
schedules.
Help your student athletes organize and create routines that remove stress
and make sports and school fun. Education and sports help provide a healthy
balance and structure for children. Many of our coaches encourage the kids
to stay focused on their school work and stress the importance of study. The
two together provide guidance and develop our children into successful young
adults.
Communication – Is key to the success of our sports programs and
important for avoiding issues that we can all do with out. Open lines of
communication are always better than letting frustrations build. If you have
concerns or issues that you need to resolve please go to your coaches and
work things out. If after speaking with a head coach you are not satisfied
follow the chain of command until you feel you have the answers you need.
Please respect your coaches and let them do what they are there for;
coaching and teaching your children. They do what they think is best for
each child and the team as a whole.
I welcome all to join the LUYAA board of directors meetings that are open
to all members. Meetings are held every 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month
at New Market Middle schools library. To help with communication board
meeting minutes are now posted to our LUYAA site at LUYAA.org for all to
view. Posted to the site are also instructions for members to use if they
have meeting topics they would like placed on the agenda. These instructions
ask that you notify me with the topic, your name and your phone number. The
BOD meeting agendas are often very full and rather than waiting to be heard
and running out of time your topic can be placed on the agenda. Please feel
free to contact me, any of the board of directors, officers, seasonal
athletic directors or commissioners. All contact information can also be
found on our web site.
Field and Facilities
Our members and communities continue to grow and so to does the need for
additional facilities and fields. This continues to be a challenge for our
organization and we struggle to find enough space for both practice and
games. LUYAA uses both FCPS fields and those schools and park operated by
Frederick county parks and recreations department.
Deer Crossing Elementary and Oakdale Elementary schools are both parks and
recreations operated locations. Our organization and our members put time
and money into maintaining these fields. That does not always guarantee
access for us the following season. Each season we go through processes to
gain approval for use of these fields but we compete with many other
organizations. It is important that we work with our schools to maintain
what we have and not over use fields.
While we have a land fund we are nowhere close to funding the purchase of
property for field development. The LUYAA board spends a great amount of
time searching for land and space for our sports teams. We need the help of
our members and if any one is willing to volunteer to help with the search
for land please contact me. Leasing may be another options for our
organization and donations are always welcome.
As citizens and LUYAA families it is important for us all to stay
informed with what happens at our schools as development continues. Adequate
field development with new school construction is the first step. However
that is often not the case and LUYAA along with the children of our schools
start out with poor field conditions. Funding field development years after
new constructions often never happens because of budget restrictions. I can
only suggest we all attend county government and BOE meetings to express our
concerns about the growth and the needs of our communities and our schools.
I would like to welcome Katherine Knowlden who has accepted the position
of our Director of Publications.
As always we welcome the support of our members and ask that you help out
any way that you can. Our sports commissioners and coaches are always in
need of help; these folks and their families give up a lot for our children.
Please help give back to them buy doing what you can to help them out even
if it’s just taking the time to thank them.
Thank you and I wish everyone a safe and successful sports season.
Sincerely,
Donna Peach
LUYAA President
LUYAA Refund Policy
1. All refunds will be directed through the LUYAA webpage, www.luyaa.org.
In the event that internet access is unavailable, please contact the
registrar.
2. No refunds will be given after the completion of the second week of
practice.
3. A $10 Administrative fee will be imposed on all refunds. (*)
4. Late fees and annual membership dues will not be refunded.
(*) Unless a child does not make a select or travel team and no
intramural team is available in the same sport, or if the sport is full at
the time of payment.
Attention...LUYAA Parents
Our registrations are getting larger every season. I wanted to thank
everyone for their patience during the registration process. The weather has
not been nice to us and it creates problems for everyone. I want to give
some tips for getting through registration quickly.
1. Go to our website ( www.luyaa.org )and add your email address on the
webmaster ‘s master list. Doing this will get you the registration dates as
soon as they are set up, and any updates, changes or any other important
information.
2. Check the website often. It has about anything you would want to know
on it plus it contains contact information for the different sports. Please
start here to see if your answer is on the site.
3. Read your newsletter. It lists the upcoming registration dates and
sports. It may also have info on upcoming sports. The newsletter is also
available online.
4. If you have an outstanding balance (including returned checks) with
LUYAA it needs to be cleared up before you can register for the upcoming
season.
5. The Annual Membership Fee of $15 is collected once a year. It starts
at the January registration. If you don’t register for a sport that season,
you will pay your fee at your first registration of the year. Your
membership is good for January thru December of that year. The fee is used
for rental of the school for registration and BOD meetings, printing and
distribution of newsletters, flyers and other administrative needs. Also, $5
from each membership goes into the land fund.
Registration news:
Wow, we got through our spring registration without any snow closings!
That doesn’t mean we got through it without any problems though. LUYAA now
has the services of Sportspilot for our On-line registration. We went full
swing with their program for the spring registration.
They are adapting their program to fit LUYAA so we had some glitches come
up this time. Sportspilot has some great tech support though that helped
quite a few people get through their online registration. They have worked
hard to clear up any problems.
The $5 convenience fee is a charge to cover the processing of the
registration that we have to pay to sportspilot per transaction.
This new program allows Sport commissioners, coordinators and coaches to
quickly access information on their players and to print rosters and send
emails.
Things to remember when using the online registration:
LUYAA is using an outside vendor for our online registration system. All
data on that site is the property of LUYAA and you will not receive unwanted
emails from that vendor, and they are not allowed to sell our data to other
companies.
Unless you have NEVER played a sport with LUYAA before, you are already
in the database.
If you don't know your password, please click on the link that says, “If
you think you have a password but can't remember it click here”. Your
user name and password will be emailed to you.
Once logged in if you have difficulty adding children or registering,
please contact the tech support number listed on the website. They will be
able to take care of the problem.
Some sports will close due to high enrollment. If a sport has closed, it
will not be listed.
Some sports will take a waiting list. If your child is placed on a
waiting list you will be notified if and when an opening comes available.
During walk-in registration dates:
Registration will open up online the day of the first walk-in registration.
Online registration may be shut off during walk-in registration and for a
day or two afterward until we get everything entered so the commissioners
can check their numbers.
I hope any problems you may have had this time will not keep you from
trying the online for the fall registration.
Sue Veres
LUYAA Registrar
To register at the school
1. Check the registration dates on the front of this newsletter. If school
is cancelled or closes early due to weather we will not be allowed to use
the school for registration that night. Updates on cancelled or postponed
registrations will be posted on the website and the registration hotline as
soon as possible. There should be someone for each sport there and they
often give out information for the upcoming sport and may have other things
that need to be taken care of such as equipment, sizing, purchasing, or
paperwork to be filled out.
2. At registration you must fill out a form for each child for each sport.
If you have a question about the sport, go to that table and talk to them
before you get in the registration line. Don’t write out your check amount
until you are told the total that you owe. Please try to sign-up all your
children at one time. It makes it easier to apply the multiple sibling
discounts.
To register online
1. Go to our website at www.luyaa.org, where you will find a link for online
registration. Online registration will not start until the first day of
registration at the school.
2. Online registrations may be blacked out during the registration
dates/times at the school. Also, there will be a period of a few days after
the last registration and when late registration is turned on. This allows
the registrar and other volunteers to enter all the data, so the sport
commissioner’s can make a decision whether or not to close a sport or level.
3. Register your children one at a time starting with the oldest. The system
will automatically charge the $15.00 fee the first time you register. You
will create a user name and password. P1ease save them for the next
registration.
4. Payment will be by credit or debit card, and you will be emailed a
receipt.
5. You will notice a transaction fee added to your registration. This
is the fee charged by the company processing the credit cards, and LUYAA is
not making any money on theses fees. If you do not want to pay this fee,
then YOU MUST come to the school to register on one of the days
listed.
Late Registrations:
All registrations are considered late after the last registration date at
the school. There will be a $25.00 late fee imposed on all late
registrations. Late Registrations will be done online.
LUYAA Late Registration Policy
1. A registration is considered to be "late" if not turned in at the
official LUYAA Registration.
2. All late registrations will be subject to a $25 late fee. $10 of the
late fee will be deposited into the LUYAA Land Fund.
3. Directions for registering late can be found on the LUYAA webpage at
www.luyaa.org. In the event that internet access is unavailable, please
contact the registrar.
4. Registration is not complete until full payment is received.
TREASURER’S REPORT
Hope everyone has had a successful winter season and is looking forward
to warmer weather!
Feedback from the online registration process has been mostly positive.
Some kinks were ironed out, and we're looking for the Fall online process to
run even better. Everyone will again have the option of registering in
person at New Market Middle, or online, which would add a small transaction
fee to the total cost.
Remember to check LUYAA's website often for important news and
information, request for refunds, or late registrations.
As always, if anyone is interested in volunteering to help at the fall
registration, please contact me at
treasurer@luyaa.org.

Cheerleading
Welcome to LUYAA cheerleading! We have great news this year! If you
missed signups for grades 3-8 in January, you can STILL signup – without a
late fee. That’s right! We are opening signups for all grade levels this
spring. So, girls that will be in grades 1-8 this fall, that attend
Linganore and Urbana feeder schools can come on out and participate. The
school your daughter attends during the 2005 school year determines Lancer
or Hawk team sides.
We will field squads as follows:
Grade 1 and 2 – Mini Pony
Grade 3 – Junior Pony
Grade 4 – Pony
Grades 5 and 6 – JV
Grade 7 – B+
Grade 8 – Varsity
These breakdowns may be subject to change in the event a B+ team does not
form, OR the numbers do not permit breakdown in this fashion (too many or
too few per squad).
CAMPS – This year, we plan to have more personalized camps, divided by
age group. Details will be made available as soon as dates are finalized,
but plan for a pre-camp get together (informational meeting AND evaluation
to see what the squads needs are) in April and actual camp dates in early
August.
PRACTICES – will begin TWO weeks prior to the start of the school year.
All levels will practice Monday though Thursday 6:00 – 8:00 during those two
weeks. THESE TWO WEEKS ARE CRITICAL FOR THE GIRLS AND COACHES. IT IS KEY
THAT ALL CHEERLEADERS ATTEND THE FULL TWO WEEKS OF PRACTICE. This is where
and when we lay the groundwork for the season with cheers and stunts. If
your daughter is unable to attend these full two weeks of practices, due to
a prior family commitment, please make sure you discuss this with the
appropriate coach(es) as soon as possible. Photos (team and individual) are
generally scheduled during these two weeks as well.
Once school starts, practices will be Tuesday and Thursday nights. As the
days become shorter, practice times will change. Practice locations are
Urbana Fire Hall and New Market Middle School.
GAMES – are Saturday’s starting in late August, continuing though the end
of October. Playoffs and Super Bowl are in November. We will cheer for these
games as well, provided our teams make it! Game times are subject to change,
but generally, they start in the am with Mini Pony, ending in early evening
with Varsity. We are a TRAVEL squad, so be prepared to go as far as
Reisterstown, MD. Home games are @ New Market Middle School.
UNIFORMS (shell and skirt) – will be provided and a deposit ($50) is
required. The deposit will be held and returned when the uniform is
returned. Additional REQUIRED items are
Shoes (est. $20-$50)
Socks (est. $5-$10)
Bloomers (est. $15)
Turtle neck (est. $15-$20)
Leggings (est. $20-30)
Fleece jacket (personalized, est. $30-$35)
Please note these prices are ESTIMATES. We do our best to use local
sources and to keep costs down. We also work to spread costs over the
season, for example, immediate purchases are: shoes, socks and bloomers.
Cold weather gear purchases are not needed until after the season is
underway.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES – Each of us has our own way to be a part of the
organization. Your participation in ANY way; coaching, team moms,
fundraising, banquet planning etc. is CRITICAL to the success of the
program. We also help support our concession program by recruiting parents
to work the concessions stands during practice and games. This program
serves ALL members of the fall program, Football, Poms and Cheerleading.
Looking forward to another great season!! CHEERLEADING ROCKS!Cheerleading ROCKS!

Football
It’s hard to believe that the 2005 football season is almost here but it
is so dust off those cleats, grab that football and get ready for some fun!
There are a few changes for this upcoming season that I’d like to share with
you.
First of all I’d like to introduce the Area Directors for the 2005
football season; they are John Marciniak for Linganore, and Fred Lohr for
Urbana. John and Fred help me run the football program and they spend many
hours working hard to make sure everything is ready for the season, so
please feel free to contact them if you have any questions about the
football program, their email addresses are listed below.
This year it is looking good for Urbana to have their own home field,
located at the Fannie Mae site off of 270. This will help tremendously with
the scheduling of all football games, and give each team a place to call
“home”. Linganore will continue to use New Market Middle School as their
home field, and Deer Crossing Elementary will remain the I70 home field.
That means that we will now have 3 home fields for football! My how we have
grown thanks to all of you!
Due to the growing number of children playing football, there will now be
3 skill levels that your child could possibly play on. The determination of
where your child will play will be based on an evaluation made by the
coaches in the first week of practice. The 3 levels of football teams are
the CCFL Division I, I70 and the new CCFL Division II. The CCFL Division II
follows the same rules as the CCFL Division I, but with a must play rule.
Please keep in mind that ALL players MUST try out the 1st week of practice,
so that the coaches can evaluate their skills and determine which division
they should be placed in. It is up to the coaches to determine where the
child will play based upon their evaluations, NO EXCEPTIONS. In the event a
player fails to show up the first week of practice, that player will be
required to report to the CCFL Division I coach. The CCFL Division I coach
will evaluate the player and will make the decision where this player should
be placed.
In order to help determine in which division your child will be placed we
will need to have an accurate weight for each player, and years of
experience. There will be a scale at registration to help with this process
because their weight will, in some cases, determine automatically in which
division they will play. If you plan on registering online please be sure to
give us an exact weight and years of experience for your child. Providing
this information will help us expedite placing your child with the proper
team in the first week of practice.
We are looking forward to this season and we expect to grow even more. In
saying that, we are in need of qualified coaches and volunteers to help in
any way possible. Given that we are expecting over 500 young men and ladies
this year it is important that we get volunteers to help make this season
even more successful than last year. Without the support of family and
friends we would not be able to handle these kinds of numbers, therefore the
kids would have no where to play. PLEASE volunteer and spend time with your
child out on the field and help make this season successful. We are counting
on parents support so that we can maintain the great number of players that
we have today.
If you have any other questions, or if you would like to help out in any
way please contact the appropriate Area Directors. For Linganore contact
John Marciniak at John_Marciniak@compuware.com and for Urbana contact Fred
Lohr at Frederick.Lohr@York.com. Otherwise I look forward to seeing you at
registration or on the field.

Lacrosse
We have JUST begun this year’s LUYAA's Spring Lacrosse Program and it
continues to grow and change for the better! We have fielded 12 boys’ teams
and 4 girls’ team and are looking forward to a challenging season. The U9
boy’s teams are great addition this spring. Both Linganore and Urbana
fielded teams complete with enthusiastic coaches and parents. They will be
tearing up Frederick County lacrosse for years to come.
We have had more volunteers than ever before and numerous coaches have
attended several coaching clinics to brush up on their coaching skills.
These clinics have included The Positive Coaching Alliance sponsored by US
Lacrosse, the US Naval Academy Clinic, and numerous LUYAA sponsored and run
clinics.
We also want to offer a VERY BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OF THE COORDINATORS,
COACHES, AND OTHER LAX VOLUNTEERS. Without your help, this program would not
exist. THANKS AGAIN!!
We have had over thirty women sign up for the First Annual Mothers Who
Love Lacrosse (MWLL) Game which will be held Saturday, 30 April (a change of
one week). For further information on that, contact Darlene Endy at
dendy@xecu.net.
How does your child become part of this fastest game on two feet? Just
have them sign up at fall registration for the fall lacrosse clinics. These
are low cost, low stress, skills oriented clinics offered September through
November (weather dependent). The basics are taught to the novices and the
more experienced learn some new skills. The novices will meet twice during
the week and the experienced will usually play on Sunday.
We want to inform everyone that Stan Aldridge has stepped up to take over
the Linganore side. His desire to better the lacrosse experience for all the
boys and girls and his work ethic is appreciated by all. Thank, Stan!
Come into registration and talk to us.
Remember, have fun and lax on.

Soccer
LUYAA Soccer is primed for a successful spring season. We will field 60
teams in our three divisions of soccer, with 56 volunteer head coaches and
almost 800 children making up those 60 teams. Regular season play will begin
on April 2nd for our Competitive/Travel programs, and April 9th for our
Instructional and 4v4 programs.
As always, please keep all comments positive when attending games and
practices.
Please remember that neither the schools nor parks and rec permit pets on
their grounds, nor use of alcohol or tobacco. Your strict cooperation
enables us to continue to use the fields which we enjoy.
As always, LUYAA soccer is grateful for all of the volunteer help that we
continue to receive. Volunteers drive our sport and give us the opportunity
to accommodate as many children as we do. If you would like to volunteer
your time please call our soccer hotline at 301-662-5525 and select option
six. We are always looking for coaches, assistants, and people to help line
fields, team administrators and more. As the number of children who
participate in our league increases, so does our need for more volunteers.
LUYAA soccer is poised for more growth as well. In response to the demand
from our membership the fall of 2005 soccer season will see us add a “Soccer
Tots” program for three and four year olds. This will mean an additional
need for parent volunteer coaches as this will be a parent driven
experience. LUYAA Soccer provides free training, certification and licensing
for all coaches. If your child will be three by the beginning of the fall
soccer season than your child will be eligible to participate. Help us
spread the word to your neighbors and friends about our fall 2005 “Soccer
Tots” program for three and four year olds.
LUYAA Soccer will host two Challenger British Soccer Camps this summer at
Oakdale Middle School. The first camp will run from June 27th to July 1st.
Camp number two will begin on August 1st and conclude August 5th. There will
be a morning and an afternoon session option each week. Registrations this
year will only be accepted online at www.challengersports.com, or you can
link to it from the soccer page on
www.luyaa.org.
LUYAA Soccer is hosting its first LUYAA Soccer Golf Tournament on Monday,
May 9th, at Maple Run Golf Course in Thurmont. The day starts with a NOON
shotgun start and concludes with a full buffet dinner at the Cozy Inn. Get
your foursome involved now. Email soccerbob4v4U10@aol.com for details or

Softball
About 140 girls are set to play the great sport of softball this spring
for LUYAA. Strong registration in the under 11 intramural division allowed
us to field six solid teams. Improving numbers in the 6-8 year-old division
yielded four teams. Both are an increase of one team from 2004. All was not
roses however as we did not have enough registrars in the under 14
intramural division to fill a league. So we decided to field two teams in
the Frederick County Girls Softball League.
One benefit of this was that it allowed us to consolidate all of our game
play at Windsor Knolls Middle School (WKMS). Practices will essentially be
at WKMS, too. Just about anytime you stop by the fields, there should some
ball goin’ on! Watch the website to keep abreast of updated scheduling and
clinics offered throughout the season. Practices are underway and the season
is set to start April 16 and finish by June 13.
Plans for a concession stand are progressing so look forward to having
hot coffee and pastry on those chilly April and May Saturday mornings. The
concession stand will be amply stocked with cold beverages too, meaning no
more 5 mile trips to 7-eleven to get a drink. Let us know how the concession
stand could best serve you.
Please step up this season to help your coaches, arrive early to help
with field preparation, and to do your share with concessions. The softball
committee and the coaches are working hard to make this a super season, but
the help of every parent in whatever way possible is essential.
We cannot thank our sponsors enough for their contributions to the 2005
program. Without these folks’ support, we could not provide one of the most
economical sports offered by LUYAA:
• American Karate Academy; Pre-K to Adult
• Claridge Group
• Clearwater Landscape and Nursery
• Great Outdoors
• Philip M. Schreiber, D.M.D
• Peter J. Coccaro Jr., D.D.S., M.S., P.C.
• Rainbow Neon
• Terra Lawn & Landscaping.

A special congratulation goes out to all of the wrestlers for their
commitment and hard work throughout the season. You are all WINNERS in the
eyes of the coaches and parents.
A special thanks goes out to all the volunteers and assistant coaches who
helped move mats, mop mats, run concession, man the scoring tables during
matches, organize fund raisers, coach matches, help with practices, etc.,
etc., etc. Without the commitment of these volunteers, the wrestling program
would simply not exist. You are all great and wonderful people. THANK YOU!
Basket Bingo
Our last fund raiser for the season will be a Longaberger Basket Bingo at
the New Market Fire Hall on Sunday, April 17th, from 2:00 to approximately
6:00 PM. Anyone who is interested in tickets ($20 each) for the event can
contact Kim Harrison at (301) 831-7287. They tell me the baskets are big and
filled with goodies. It is a great family fun event.
Until next year,
Ken Wolfe
